I have always had a little trouble understanding Live Journal boundaries, how do you post to someones journal. Is it open to comment, are you suppose to comment, when do you step over a boundary on a comment (aka a post is made and feed back is not requested nor yours wanted). The culture is very difficult to me. Post are made in open format to folks you have given access to, are we or are we not trusted and committed. Hell if I know.
Over the past year I have read posts by those who I have friend and have been friend by who have commented on something some one has done, posted or said as being retarded. I ask that if you are reading my post that you do not comment but rather reflect on the what I have to write.
In American culture there are a large group of people who have been labeled RETARDED. Yes they have been delayed and if we used this term to refer to someone with special considerations and with respect and love I would not take issue with the use of this term. Unfortunately this is not the case. It is used as an insult, a slur!
What is accepted as appropriate is using this label with indifference to those who are fighting against this labeling. If I used any number of derogatory racial terms (not limited to the color of one's skin) I would be shunned. However there are folks who think it okay to call someone or their acts retarded. This is not used as a blessing or a complement but rather as an insult, hence if I were to use an ethnic phrase as an insult I do not think it cool nor would many others.
What I ask of those reading my post is to rethink their use of this term. If something is stupid, say stupid. If something is crazy, say crazy. I think you have the idea of my intent.
In Massachusetts we have finally won the battle of changing the name of the Department of Mental Retardation! It is now, as of July 1st, the Department of Developmental Services. I cannot express how important this change has been in the lives of those who I work in support of and their families.
Please make the effort to stop using this term. Using this term in our day is an insult, derogatory and hurtful.
Thank you for taking the time to read this note through instead of dismissing it.
For those parents out there, the chorus to this song, is the very first song I taught my son when he was old enough to talk 20 some years ago...
Let us never forget to!
